Former First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos was reelected by acclamation as president of the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) during the association’s annual general assembly over the weekend at the Philippine Sports Commission’s Athlete’s Lounge.
Ramos, however, will serve her term for only two years instead of the regular four-year term stipulated in the association’s by-laws and constitution.
“Na-late kasi ang aming election and based on our constitution we have to elect a new president during Olympic year,” said Ramos.
Actually, national coach and grassroots development program chair Errol Chan was nominated as president by Romeo Gacatian, representing the Pampanga Badminton Association, but the former national champion declined and gave his full support for Ramos to continue her programs.
Chan, representing the National Capital Region (NCTR) had in his possession 40 proxy votes out of 103 voting members.
Ramos said she will appoint other officials that will comprise the executive board as she vowed to put premium on the PBA’s grassroots development program, launched early last year with the staging of the Yonex-Sunrise Regional Championships under the leadership of Chan.
Ramos also revealed that a new contract with Yonex Apparel is under negotiations and part of the contract is financial support to the athletes’ participation in international events. |
