In an incredible day of Finals action at The 2007 Yonex-Sunrise Phils National Open Badminton Championships, held at the Yonex Philippines Badminton Club, Shaw Blvd, Mandaluyong City, the Bartolome brothers, Ricky and Rodel thrashed the top seeds Ian Gil Piencenaves of Butuan City Badminton Club and Whackers Badminton Academy/PLDT in an action-packed Open Mens Doubles Finals match, 25-23, 28-26. After shocking the 2nd seed Escoses & Amahit in the semifinals, the win of
Ricky & Rodel in the Finals completes the sweep of the top two seeds – the first time the tourney's four-year history that the top 2 seeds were defeated. Throughout the match, Ricky & Rodel have shown incredible and consistent defense and have all the answers to the attacking game of Junio and Piencenaves. The crucial point in the match came at 16-15 in the 2nd set when after three successive errors from their opponents, Ricky and Rodel Bartolome did not turn back and continued its lead. At 27-26 and after the defensive lob of Piencenaves' went long, the Bartolome brothers were on their knees,
still can not believe that they have captured the Men's Doubles crown.
Earlier in the afternoon, top seeds Lloyd Escoses representing Yonex Phils Badminton Club and Irene Chiu of RCT Badminton Academy demolished their respective opponents and won the Open MS and WS
crowns. Escoses won over Arolas Amahit of Phil Army, 21-13, 21-16 and successfully defended the title he won in 2006. Irene Chiu, winner of the 2005 title encountered no signs of threat from her
opponent throughout the match and cruised to her 21-14, 21-17 win over Chona Rivera of Whackers Badminton Academy Laguna. Irene Chiu later paired up with Vanessa Tanco (both representing RCT Badminton Academy) to win the Open WD crown, over the Raquel and Rachel Guerrero (DLSU/Adidas) , 21-17, 21-16.
In the last featured match of the Finals night, Arolas Amahit and Casey Ang-Siy, representing Phil Army/ACC/Mesuca/ RLC/Chowking, upset the 2006 champions Melvin Llanes and Marga Tan (YPBC/Mesuca/ RLC), 21-15 17-21 21-14.
In other Finals action, Ginalee Daymiel and Ronald Daymiel lost their respective Women's and Men's doubles Finals in the Seniors category. Dalia Santiago and Rina Batuigas of Phils Star defeated
Ginalee Daymiel/Yugean Yusikee of Bingo Bonanza in the WD Finals, 18-21 21-16 22-20 while the Serrano twins, Jonas and Jerome Serrano (representing HOOKED/FEU) demolished Ronald Daymiel and Vergilio Natan, 21-17 21-19. As a consolation, Ginalee Daymiel and Ronald Daymiel representing Bingo Bonanza won the XD crown and their respective Men's and Single's titles. Other multi-tile holders of the tourney were Elaine Lao (Seniors C LD and XD crowns) and Manric Zalamea (Seniors C MD and XD crowns)
