Junio & Chiu, Llanes & Mance grab glory as Powerade Cup 2006 champions

Noted for their power-packed smashes, inexorable defense and perfect cross-court drop-shots, Jaime Junio and partner, Irene Chiu, share lead en route to winning the POWERADE Badminton Cup 2006 Mixed Doubles/Open-Invitational Category.

Experience and good defense spelled the difference for Melvin Llanes and Jojo Mance when they spearheaded the bid for Men’s Doubles/Open-Invitational Category and eventually smashed into Powerade history for clinching victory in the coveted class this year.

In a big gathering of international and local stand-outs vying for the prestigious POWERADE Badmintron Cup 2006 jewel with a prize pot of more than one million pesos in cash and badminton equipments, close to a thousand shuttlers trooped to Yonex Badminton Court in Mandaluyong City, Philippines last November 18, 19, 25, 26 and December 2, 2006 in an event backed by Viva Mineral Water, Coca-Cola Light, and Kimoni Philippines, the official racquet sponsor.

The local badminton community was treated to a world-class match staged by the distinguished 2000 Sydney Olympics silver medalist and former world rank number 1, Minarti Timur, together with international badminton stars Lili Wang, Rudy Wijaya and Kwee Tek Ming, as they wrest to share lead in the prestigious tilt in a showdown seldom seen in local badminton drawing immense applause and high
approbation.

Minarti, world rank number one in Mixed Doubles event from 1995 to 2000, six time Indonesian Open champion and title-holder of international competitions such as Malaysia Open, German Open, Thailand Open, Japan Open, Dutch Open, All England Cup, and World Cup from 1995 to 2002, played in Mixed Double match in tandem with Rudy Wijaya, former world rank number 5 and 1995 Russian Open title-holder, against Lili Wang and Kwee Tek Ming, former national team members of China and Indonesia, respectively.
