What is the fastest racquet sports today? BADMINTON!
What is the fastest way to get people together? BADMINTON!
Faithful to the lightning speed and accuracy needed for this sport, the JUBILEE EVANGELICAL CHURCH- ORTIGAS CELL GROUPS; over a few weeks, under the coordination of all Cell Leaders and organized through the keen eye of Michael Go, the 1 st OCG Tournament was set. Aimed to raise funds for Fonzki Lam's family; Fonzki was diagnosed with leukemia, and eventually succumbed to multi-organ failure a few months ago.
Open to it's cell members, family and friends, on September 04, 2005, Sunday, the players breezed through the streets converging in SMART SHOT BADMINTON CLUB, in Agoncillo St., Malate at 1:00 pm to what could be described as a ‘flawless' tournament.
An opening prayer led by JEC's Senior pastor Rev. Dr. Vicente Sia was followed by the usual formalities and the first games in all courts began as scheduled at 1:30 pm. Playing four (4) teams (Blue, Green, Red and Yellow), where each team is composed of 5 categories each: Juniors', Beginners', Ladies', Men's and Mixed Doubles following a format of Single-Round Robin-Point System.
However friendly the competition was, players with varied skill levels gave their all in each of their 6 games; its intensity fueled by cheers for personal favorites. By the time the games were over, many a drop, drive, flick, alley, smash, push, hairpin shots were made. Never mind the wood shots that was thankfully legalized back in the 60s, the Beginners tossed and drove their shuttlecocks with passion! Each player must have covered well over 2 kilometers running, jumping, lunging, twisting, stretching and striking, covering all if not most of the court.
6 pm brought tabulations from Georgina K. Go for winners and from our efficient project Treasurer Virginia Yap , total funds raised from sponsors NorGe Brevis , Hattatsu Philippines, PC Corner, Zui, Terrie's, CMK and Celine , and many generous donors.
Trophies were given to the winners in each category together with it's respective runners up. Another trophy was generously awarded to each of the member of the overall Team Champion.
A heartwarming speech was made as Elena Lam accepted the amount raised after which a closing prayer led by OCG Zone pastor, Pstr. Joel Pan before the players were ushered to SMART SHOT'S Function room where a sumptuous dinner was served.
Most striking was the bond built amongst the OCG members, brought about by the accurate leveling and pairings made by organizing committee. No faults, no slings, no throws, no injuries! What more can we pray for? Praise God! |
