Reigning women's titlist La Salle and University of the East (UE) pulled off contrasting 3-2 wins over separate opponents in Day 6 of the 73rd UAAP badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Badminton Hall.
La Salle had to go through the eye of a needle to beat hard-fighting Far Eastern University (FEU) while UE won the first three games before allowing Adamson to clinch the last singles and doubles matches.
Descka Calimlim opened up with a 21-18, 21-17 victory for the Lady Archers as she only needed 27 minutes to complete a straight-sets win against Rochelle Reyes in the first singles.
The Lady Tams tied it at 1-1 with Kim Maoyono scoring a 21-14, 21-16 triumph over Geli Ramos in the second singles.
Both teams then split the doubles matches with La Salle’s Bernice Arsenio and Danica Bolos defeated the pair of Clarissa Pascual and Alyssa Mendoza, 21-16, 21-17, while FEU forced a deciding match when Reyes and Mayono clobbered Calimlim and Ramos, 21-5, 21-17.
Bolos sealed the Lady Archers’ sixth straight win with a 25-minute 21-12, 21-13 demolition of Pascual in the final singles match.
The loss dropped the Lady Tamaraws to a 4-2 win-loss card followed by the 3-3 slates of University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines, which defeated Ateneo and National U, respectively.
UE, behind RP team mainstay Fatima Cruz, also pulled off a 3-2 win over Adamson to join La Salle on top of the standings.
Cruz only needed 25 minutes to dispatch Diane Clado, 21-10, 21-7, in the opening singles then teamed up with May Pamorada for another straight-set 21-10, 21-14 in the first doubles match for a 3-0 count that sealed the win for the Lady Warriors.
Roschelle Andres gave UE the other win after a 21-11, 21-14 decision against Lyka Pardo in the second singles.
The loss dropped the Lady Falcons to fourth spot tying Ateneo with identical 1-5 win-loss slates. NU remains winless after six matches.
In the men’s division, reigning champion UST remains undefeated after a 3-2 decision over Ateneo.
The Tigers, led by Peter Gabriel Magnaye, won their sixth straight match while the Blue Eagles joined La Salle on second spot with 5-1 cards after the Green Archers’ 4-1 triumph against UP.
The Maroons and Bulldogs, a 3-2 winner against FEU, are tied at 3-3 while the Red Warriors finally barged into the win column after a 5-0 rout of winless Adamson.
