The Player was seated on the hall’s bench with a friend. They were waiting for their turn to play. The Player was oblivious to the grumbling that had started from within.
“Bossy.”
“Know-it-all.”
“Lazy, I’d say. Just lounges in his booth up there,” whispered the body parts among themselves.
“I heard that!” said Brain.
The muttering ceased abruptly.
“You know, I imagine as though I’m always on trial here.”
“But what about Hand?” Brain mused. “Hand is clumsy and always groping about.”
Hand said, “There you go again, always giving us a piece of your mind. Okay, sometimes I’m all butterfingers and tend to fumble around, but Eyes is worse – being shifty and nearsighted and all.”
“Stop pointing your finger at me, Hand. It’s true that I sometimes give you the look,” admitted Eyes, “but Mouth is the real bother. Mouth is just too noisy and always has bad breath.”
“That so?” Mouth mouthed indignantly. “Then why don’t you badmouth Nose? Always minding other people’s business and breathing down my neck.”
“Oh yeah? Ears is the nosey one. Always on the prowl for juicy gossip and off-colored jokes,” snorted Nose.
“If I’m all ears then Feet is all left feet. Always foot-dragging when tired. Seems like Feet is always tired! Besides, Feet also smells awful. Between Feet and Mouth being the ultimate stinker, I’d say it’s a toss-up,” concluded Ears.
Suddenly, the Player stands up and walks to the court. Feet carries the Player and all the others to the middle of the court with Eyes guiding them. Ears’ inner parts help the Player maintain balance while Brain coordinates everything.
Hand grasps the racket with just the right pressure and adjusts the grip according to the desired stroke. Hand is an engineering marvel in terms of design and function. Man-made robotic hands pale in comparison to Hand’s dexterity and acute sense of touch.
Eyes tracks the shuttle’s flight in true 3-D. Furthermore, Eyes monitors the movements of the Player’s opponents and partner with peripheral vision. Clearly, Eyes is superior to the most sophisticated camera around. Brain analyzes their input and instructs Feet when and where to lunge. Brain likewise directs Hand on which shot to take. All these take place in a second or two. No supercomputer is a match for Brain’s computing and thinking powers.
Ears pitches in with heard shouts of “Mine!”, “Yours!”, “Go!”, and other verbal cues from the Player’s partner and opponents; thus aiding Brain to make a better assessment. Brain also enlists Mouth to shout the single-word cues to the Player’s partner, which prevents them from getting in each other’s way.
Nose makes sure that the air inhaled into the lungs is warmed in the nasal passages and filtered of dust and other foreign material. The Player’s air intake increases as the game progresses, which causes Mouth to sometimes help Nose out.
The Player enjoyed the match immensely. So did the body parts.
Together, they enabled the Player to play badminton like no man-made robot can.
They realized that each one was not always as bad as one may seem after all. In the end, each accepted the others for what they are.
Warts and all.
God put our bodies together in such a way that even the parts that seem the least important are valuable. He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others. If one part of our body hurts, we hurt all over. If one part of our body is honored, the rest of the body will be honored too. -1 Corinthians 12: 24-26 CEV
Of course, you knew all along that we weren’t really talking about parts of the body, right?
Right. |
